Conjointly with Senanayake Samudra Sanctuary, Gal Oya Valley North-East Sanctuary, Gal Oya Valley South-West Sanctuary, the whole Gal Oya Reservation makes an area of 62, 937 hectare of wildlife conservation. About 145 species of birds of 334 species of Sri Lanka can be seen at Gal oya national park. The Lesser Adjutant, Spot-billed Pelican, Red-faced Malkoha, Oriental Darter, Grey Heron, Lesser Whistling Duck, White-bellied Sea Eagle, and Grey-headed Fish Eagle are commonly seen birds in it.. The highest groups are common Langur, Toque Macaque, Leopard (Pathera Pardus kotiya) sloth bear (Melursus Ursinus), Elephant, Wild Swine, three species of deer and Water Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis).
Gal Oya national park can be reached from Colombo via Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Udawalawe, Thanamalwila, Wellawaya, Moneragala and then north from Siyambalanduwa to Inginiyagala. Inginiyagala provides the tourists the opportunity of a boat trip around the Senanayake Samudra reservoir. As well as, Ampara can be reached by domestic flight. The ideal time to visit Gal Oya National Park is from March to July. During this period, the boat safaris bring the sight of elephants swimming from one island to another island in the Senanayaka Samaudra reservoir.
Tourists can relish its beauty and wild life by boat safari as well as by jeep safaris. But the Galoya National Park has no accommodation within the park. Rest house and bungalows are at Inginiyagala and a circuit bungalow is available at Eekgal Aru located 23km away from the park office. However you can experience BBQ dinners, nature walks, outdoor tented camps, beach walks, photographs, paintings, filming, jeep safari, boat safari, bird watching, etc.
