The National Park's annual daily temperature is 28 °C (82 °F). This is one of protected areas where Sri Lankan Elephants can be seen in large herds. As well as, it is one of the Important Bird Watching Zone in Sri Lanka. The park is situated 225 km away from Colombo. Ruins of Malagamuwa, Wilmitiya, supply tanks and Kalinga Yoda Ela canal which are built by King Parakramabhahu remain in the national park. Wasgamuwa National Park exhibits one of the highest biodiversity among the protected areas in Sri Lanka.
The nearest large town is Polonnaruwa, 10 km from the northern boundary. Minneriya and Kaudulla national Parks, Mahaweli & Amban rivers & Polonnaruwa Archeological Site, Archeological Museum are the other nearest important places to see around Wasgamuwa National Park Camping Site.
